A New Haircut: Lessons Learned

For a long time I have been considering a big change in hair style. I have contemplated going very short for the longest time, however I have been hesitant to make the change. If I cut my hair, then I couldn’t use it as camoflage. Camoflage what? What does this even mean? It is clearly a story that I have used to avoid certain feelings. Sound familiar?

In my practice of helping individuals and organize thrive through change and transition, many times I advocate taking small intentional steps each and everyday to reinforce thoughts and change behaviors. These small steps result in sustained change. There is a lot of research to support this approach. However, sometimes you need to go big or go home to unleash your creative energies and move beyond your limiting beliefs.

The motivation I needed to cut my hair came from the outside. A dear friend was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and about to start chemotherapy. I decided to cut my hair in support and love of her. I went to see my stylist and said ‘it’s time to cut my hair really short’. He asked are you sure and I responded yes, let’s do this! My hair hasn’t been this short since elementary school!

I learned a few interesting things that can be applied to your personal and professional selves:

  • Sometimes an external motivating source is what you need to shake things up. Use what works for you.
  • Many times the stories we tell ourselves and our limiting beliefs are usually not based on reality. Test them before you believe them.
  • You have the power to change your story.
  • There are many things in life we can’t control . Recognize what you have control over and go cut your hair.
  • Each day offers us an opportunity to take a step and show that we are ready for change, big or small.
